Disappointment can smack you on the back of the head sometimes. Besides Hubzilla I have also been reasonably active on Identica/StatusNet/GNUSocial for years. As it is in its slow death spiral now, I thought I'd connect to a few ActivityPub-using folks via Hubzilla.

I found someone (who shall remain nameless) whose podcast output I have admired (mostly Linux/free software howtos and the like). Could be interesting I thought.

I was not expecting scores of Breibart, second amendment hectoring, anti-immigrant and Islam stuff and essentially lazy Twitter retweets.

Colour me surprised.

Some of my own real life friends started pushing conservative American rhetoric a few years ago and I've felt the same. These are the values that "the algorithm" has decided pushes their buttons and makes them buy stuff, so it continues to feed them into their personal echo chamber where they are amplified and regurgitated.

@elmussol @Mike Macgirvin I've encountered things like this in the last couple of years. People whose FOSS content I once engaged with on some level I no longer have any interest in. It's now painfully apparent to me that not everyone in the Free Software world is great, and there seem to be too many who are pushing the hate agenda.

I should also say that not everyone in the AP fediverse world is a Breitbart-spewing chud. Encounters with Actual Fascists were also a motivating factor in my writing an AP server so that I could have some level of confidence about the content I'm hosting.
